Cassie Johnston needs to move on from a bad break-up. To start, she gets a new hairstyle and leaves the hospital scrubs behind for a research lab coat.   Exhausted and yet excited about the new challenges, she’s unprepared to handle it when her heartbreaker walks back in to her life.

Mikhail Ivanovich tried to do the right thing for the woman he loves, but he’s haunted by her absence. Buying himself in work hasn't helped and eventually he accepts life is too short not to spend it with the woman he loves.

A heat wave blankets New York City and the two finally sit down to talk about what happened between them. Will they reunite or are there too many insurmountable problems standing in their way?

WARNING! There's a sexy shape shifter living in NYC wearing a 3 piece suit that will do anything to get his woman back in his arms where he can keep her safe and happy!

Excerpt
“You okay, Cassie?”

“Oh yes, yes, sorry everyone.” With a smile pasted on her face, she looked around the table at the faces of her worried and anxious workmates. They’d all been enjoying lunch together until she’d screamed in terror at something no one else could see. “I guess my mind traveled into uncharted territory.” The small group of men and women tittered and returned to talking while she put her hands on her heated cheeks. It was a useless move to stop the blush staining them from spreading further, but she did it all the same.

Groaning silently with embarrassment, she reminded herself how, until then, the altered reality only happened at home, while she slept. Realistically, she could no longer blame her weird tiger dreams on her problems with change. Maybe she should talk to a mental health professional.

Why couldn’t she be like everyone else?

Why did she have to embarrass herself by daydreaming about her white tiger while sitting in the company’s air-conditioned and packed lunchroom?

Flustered, she fussed with her salad before eventually excusing herself early, telling her lunch mates she needed to make a couple of calls before heading back into the lab. Actually, what she needed was a few minutes alone to pull herself back together. She made her way to her office, all the while focused on controlling her breathing and heartbeat, which were still unsettled from the recent trip her imagination had taken.

Sitting at her desk, she opened a file, and pretended to read while her mind raced through what had happened. There was something going on that wasn’t right. If she had any doubts in leaving the hectic pace of the hospital floor for the quiet one of research, they were long gone. She couldn’t be more thrilled with her decision to accept Dr. Winton’s offer. While change was not her thing, the new job had actually been a good decision.

On her first day at work, she’d been placed on a team looking into diabetes, specifically childhood type 1. They were trying to pinpoint the problem gene or genes in a bid to eradicate or, at the very least, find a means to treat the disease. It was exciting and rewarding, as well as slow and methodical work, with hours spent alone in a clean room. The people in her group were great, focused on the job at hand, and yet were still real. Not for one minute did she feel like the new kid on the block. It had been an easy transition, she couldn’t have asked for better.

Unfortunately, it meant the only problem she’d had all week was between her and the tiger. For almost a year, he’d offered her comfort through her imaginings, and she was thankful. Suddenly, he’d moved out of her dreams to take up residence in her brain, ensuring he was with her whether awake or asleep. She was scared on many different levels and, because she wasn’t sure how to handle it, she’d tried to ignore his presence.

Apparently that tactic was no longer an option.

All week the white beast haunted her. It was the visits while she was up and aware that upset her the most. Everything would be moving along normally, her eyes and brain focused on something, maybe a printout full of data, and the white tiger would be there waiting for something. Or, like what happened in the lunchroom, her mind would travel and there he’d be, coming for her. Sometimes an aura of impatience surrounded him and eventually he’d make his presence known while growling and pacing. Other times he’d be there, quiet, curious but not intrusive. Then there were a few times when he’d lie down and purr. Those were the more curious incidents. Whenever they happened, she was drawn to him, and wanted to hold him close. Then she’d remember he was a ruthless beast and a figment of her imagination.

The worst time was when she believed he spoke to her. She didn’t know why her subconscious expected and accepted a tiger could speak, but it did. The words were always the same and clearly enunciated as they kept an ongoing, unrelenting cadence beating through her body. Come back? That implied she knew the tiger, personally, and that wasn’t possible. People and animals did not communicate.

Was she losing her mind? Schizophrenic? Obviously something wasn’t right in her head and it was getting worse since the tiger never truly left her alone. Even right then, as she was internally freaking out at her desk, he was there waiting for something from her, and she didn’t have any idea what it was. However, she was absolutely certain about one thing. It was becoming increasingly clear, the cat’s tolerance for her to do what it wanted her to do was running desperately low.

It was odd how she’d never seriously questioned his presence in her dreams before today. He was always there, giving her comfort, but something had changed because he wouldn’t leave.

Mentally, Cassie pushed away from the tiger sitting in her mind, and turned her focus back to work.

I’ll question the state of my mental health later. The minute she spoke those words to herself, she swore a growl reverberate through her soul, bringing a chill to her flesh along with it. Her first response was to snarl back at the tiger and doing so earned her a purr, which put her right back where she’d been.

She was questioning where her sanity had gone because it clearly wasn’t present.

* * * * *
The next morning she was lying in bed, panting for a breath, while her heart pounded wildly after another visit from the white tiger. She couldn’t simply accept his presence any longer. To make matters even more difficult to handle was the continuation of a record breaking heat wave. The weather had escalated to dangerous levels, with massive power outages, which seemed to have put all the city’s residents on edge. She wasn’t sure if it was the heat or dreams, but it was too much for Cassie to take. It was time she found a doctor who would listen to her concerns about having an imagined tiger camping out in her head.

Trying to relax, she fluffed up her pillows, and mentally approached the issue that left her questioning her connection with reality. When she found no answers to any of the questions she had, Cassie got up, and made her way to the shower, bypassing the warm and going straight to cold.

With her new job came a different schedule. It was her first day off and she needed to do some errands. Thinking about the freedoms she’d gained by taking a Monday through Friday job made her smile. It had been a long time since she’d had an entire weekend off. She wasn’t sure what to do.

Actually, maybe she’d get the errands over with, and do something different like catch a movie. Theaters usually had great air conditioning and the weather reports she’d heard last night had called for another hundred degrees plus day.

However, before she made any decisions of what to do, she wanted to read the newspaper. All she’d done during the past week was stay on top of the headlines and she was eager to read in depth about what was happening around the world. A small pleasure of hers was to have the weekend paper delivered to her front door. She didn’t have to get dressed and walk down the block to the corner shop for one, all she had to do was open her door, and there it would be.

After drying off, she made her way back into her room to get dressed.

Since it was already hot, she decided to forgo both bra and panties until she had to go out. Given the choice, she didn’t want anything binding her in the hot weather if it wasn’t necessary. She put on a short spaghetti-strap cotton dress and was ready to start the day by settling on the couch to relax with the paper.

Making her way to the front door, she unlocked and unbolted it, pulled it open, only to be stunned speechless.

“Morning, Cassie.”

“Mi-Mikhail.”

Leaning against the stair rail outside her apartment was Mikhail Ivanovich, in the flesh, and he was holding her paper. Even in the sweltering temperatures, he looked cool, calm, and utterly handsome. The man looked sexy in a simple white t-shirt, shorts, and sneakers without socks. It wasn’t fair. Dressed to the nines or casual like he was with his white hair tamed and framing his sexy eyes, he always had the ability to ignite her passion and need to be fulfilled.

Although the sun was at its zenith and his blood was close to a boiling point, he knew it was more with lust than the actual temperature.  Not wanting to talk any longer, Mikhail moved them down to the grass and made a place for himself between her legs.  Throwing his head back, he closed his eyes as she wrapped her silken limbs around his thighs.  When he didn’t think things could get any better, they did when she hooked her feet right beneath his ass, soft arms encircled his neck, and she told him what he needed to hear.

“I’ve missed you every day, every minute you were gone.  Take me, lover.  Please, fill me up, and love me.”

Shifting his arm around, he wedged a hand between them, and held her pussy lips open.  He wasted no time in nudging the crown of his cock inside her and, with their gazes connected, welcomed the feeling of loving unity as he entered her.

“Paradise.”  He claimed against her mouth and slowly slid his rod through her hot tight clench.  He was thrilled to once again be able to hear her moan his name on a note of pleasure.  Reality was much better than dreams.

Their bodies were slick with water and sweat, gluing them to each other.  Mikhail didn’t move, he wanted to take a minute to feel her surrounding him, and give her some time to adjust to him being back inside her body.  Bracing himself on his forearms, he lifted his chest up and scraped the hard excited points on the tips of her breasts along the way.

“You are so very beautiful.”  He tried to hold back a moan as she used her feminine muscles to grip him hard, only he couldn’t.  Like a pulse, she released the delicious pressure only to tighten around him again.

“Yes, and you’re handsome, but you’d better love me now.  I-I’ve, please, I’ve missed having you here, inside me.  Please!”

“Okay, sweetheart, okay.”  He pulled his cock out until only the knob remained, then pushed back in.  Cassie’s breasts shook a little when he bottomed out.  The tight red tips held his attention.  His mouth watered to have them at his mercy, but he wanted to see her climax.  The answer to the quandary was to continue using his body to make them even stiffer.  Mikhail started to move faster, harder, making the two mounds move wildly, and knock against his chest.

Sweat slipped down his spine, pooling in the small of his back.  His hair grew damp and yet, all he could think about or feel was the woman beneath him.  She moaned as her hips bounced up to meet each of his thrusts.  In his arms was the woman who meant the world to him and made him feel like a better person.  Finally, finally, she was back where she belonged.

Inspirational Share on Hump Day

I'm thinking about my soon to be released book, Come Back in specific and the series in general, and thought since it's Wednesday I'd share where my head was at for the hero(es).

There's no particular reason my reference pics of these men are all b/w, I know what they look like in color and yet the lack thereof does suit the Come series.

Have I mentioned the series is an erotic romance about a trio of shapeshifters?

Thinking about how these pics fit together?  Not to worry, I'll share more details once I have cover(s).

Meanwhile, they are inspiring :-)

Fantabulous News x 3 = Tremendous Joy!

Recently I received the wonderful news that Tease Publishing had accepted not one, not two, but all three books in my 'Come' trilogy - shapeshifting erotic romances - and I had to share the news!

The 'Come' series delves into the lives of three brothers who aren't the typical Russian émigrés.  To make life more trying, they aren't able to be truly happy until they fully accept who they are and what the future holds for them.  Only once that happens will the women they love respond to their call and come.

"Come Back" is the first book and shares Mikhail Ivanovich's, the eldest Ivanovich brother, path to reclaiming love and will be out this Spring with "Come to Me" [book 2] - Nikolai's story - and "Come and Stay" [book 3] - Aleksandr's story - to follow.

Soon I'll be sharing more snippets and treats from the series here and there, so keep your eyes open for some seriously sexy Russian shifters.  Meanwhile, yes, they are Russian but they live in NYC.  Maybe you'll cross their paths in Central Park or circling the Empire State Building.

An #AADNOLA Reading Challenge Review of Summer Surrender: Sun Moon by @Bronwyn Green @aadconvention

Summer Surrender by Bronwyn Green
Shapeshifter Erotic Romance + Ménage a Trois
Published by Resplendence Publishing

Buy ebook from All RomanceAmazonBNResplendence Publishing

Hollis Chambers came to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula to teach summer school at a small rural high school. She’d planned on hanging out on the shores of Lake Superior, taking walks in the woods and studying the wildlife. She never imagined that she’d meet one man, let alone two, to have a hot summer fling with.

Lynx shifters Daniel Cichosz and Josiah Wilder know a good thing when they see it and they’re fairly certain that the gorgeous, full-figured substitute teacher is just who they’ve been looking for. Hollis surrenders to their seduction, but how will she feel about being mated to shifters, particularly when Daniel’s brother is added to the mix?
This was one of those books I couldn’t put down. I had to finish Summer Surrender: Sun Moon and then swiftly moved on to the next by Ms. Green, Autumn Sacrifice: Blood Moon. The draw for me to these books was the characters first and foremost, and then came the shifter and hot ménage a trios aspects.

Ms. Green builds characters in a way that makes you feel like you know them already, just not all the intimate details. Maybe it’s who she writes about, relatable people that make them so enjoyable to read. Hollis Chambers is a teacher from New York City working for the summer in Michigan. Daniel Cichosz, vice principal, and Josiah Wilder, teacher, are also working summer school. They’re locals who make Hollis feel at ease in a new place so different from the city as well as the reader. While I have visited Michigan a few times, even stopped off at one of the lakes, Ms. Green ensured I want to go again and spend more time there.

One thing that I often find awkward in books that contain a ménage a trois is how the scenario is introduced. The opening lines of Summer Surrender: Sun Moon put the multiple partner lifestyle there as already an unconventional yet established way of life, which enables the reader no room to query its existence but leaves room for it to grow into a potential reality for the heroine.

Okay, I admit I know Bronwyn Green and am honored to call her sister. We’re both Green(e)’s which means we’re often sat next to her at conventions and so I’ve been able to get to know her in what could be a stressful situation. No matter what’s happening, she’s a gentle soul that I can now attest is an unmentioned thread that comes out in her work. Summer Surrender: Sun Moon was the book you can’t put down because you want to know what happens next, not only next, but how it all ends. I know they’ll be happy, but will they be together? Remember, Hollis Chambers is there for the summer, so…sorry, you’ll have to read it to find out.

Ms. Green will be at Authors After Dark Readers Convention in New Orleans so make sure and read her before the event.  Here are some links to find her and her books, friend her, like her, but most of all, read her books!

Big Huge Reader Contest - Day 3!

Caged by Diana DeRicci

Erotic Shapeshifter/Science Fiction Romance

A cat shifter trying to fit into a world that didn't start as hers. The man who would love and protect her with everything he had.

Mira never expected to find the one man she would grow to trust and love among the human men. Living with humans had grown to be a skill for the Felids. So long as they didn't expose themselves, they were safe.

Rhys never thought he'd find the love of his life or that she would turn out to be an alien cat shifer. What she could do with her shape was amazing. He vowed to protect her and her people.

Unfortunately, someone has learned of their existence, and is hunting for Mira.

Excerpt

Mira watched his sleeping form with unblinking eyes. Steady breaths made his chest and shoulders rise and fall. She’d only recently realized she liked to watch him when he was this relaxed. He was a hard worker, constantly doing something at the house, or concentrating on something at work. His mind rarely slowed down, except for sleep. All that energy kept his lean body trim. His own version of weightlifting kept him toned. She licked her lips.

Rhys was a walking god. Dark brown hair and luscious eyes, he was always able to make her heart race. Even sitting in the chair across the room by the window, simply watching him sleep, he drove her crazy to be near him. Their relationship hadn’t started out on the best foot, but they’d somehow managed to survive each other. The first thing she’d wanted to do was run, then kill him and then run had become an option, because he’d discovered her secrets. How quickly she found out he was a man who was worthy of her secrets.

Burying her sigh in the crook of her arm where it rested on her lifted knee, she let her gaze wander to stare out the window again. It was afternoon. He was due back at work the next day. Their weekend away at his grandfather’s cabin in the Catskills was a total disaster.

Because of her. She winced, toying with the rolled seam edge of the chair cushion between her fingers. How had they known to set the net? Rhys was right. What was the chance that a cheetah would be found in the mountains?

In this form, unless she needed blood, she was undetectable. She bled red, the same as a human, only her blood never lost its red oxygenated color. She didn’t have a blue vein in her body anywhere. So maybe she wasn’t exactly like a human, but whoever noticed had to be damned close to catch the difference.

Except for Rhys, no one ever had been.

Felids were home schooled or tutored, because they couldn’t pass the blood work needed for public schools. They didn’t need the vaccinations because of their immunity, so that was another strike against them, though none had ever been infected by the many ailments that seemed to plague mankind. Fitting in had never been easy, regardless.

There weren’t only the public aversions, but the cat needed to run. That was essential. A cat with cabin fever grew cranky and hard to control. Mature Felids could control the cat easier, but it still wasn’t a pleasant experience for the Felid, or anyone they were cooped up with.

That was why Rhys had taken her north. Since admitting to their bond and letting the relationship happen, she’d been pacing the townhouse for weeks. His grandfather’s cabin should have been perfect, a long way out of the city. Secluded. Unknown. But someone had known.

Then a thought occurred to her. Something he’d said…only them, not with the family. He was right. Who knew the two of them were going there for the weekend? No one else in his family knew her secrets. He’d glossed over a lot of her background and childhood with his mother, refusing to divulge anything she wouldn’t say on her own. Rubbing her chin on her knee, she knew she loved him for that alone.

The world outside the window was mostly quiet. The suburb where his townhome was located was well out of the inner city. Birds flew from tree to tree, chirping and discussing their moment to moment. Squirrels raced up and down large elms and oaks, their brown tails fluffy banners of their passing.

A tiger trotting down the sidewalk would create havoc and terror, she was sure of it, though the idea of doing it still brought a smile to her, just because it would be interesting to say the least.

Her brow scrunched as she tried to sift through memories and possibilities. Had someone discovered what she was, what they were, and were hunting for them, like Rhys feared? She wasn’t sure how many Felids still existed, only the five from her home pod. She knew there had been over a hundred on the initial mission sent to Earth, but beyond that, much of what had been was lost to memory. To help the younger generations integrate easier, the elders had even ceased using their own language. As different as a sponge to a turnip, the Felids had managed to hide among the humanoid race, though their biology and anamorphic ability set them apart irrefutably.

Laying a cheek on the crook of her arm, she wished she had answers to what had spurred yesterday morning’s capture. Maybe it was simply because she was a cheetah caught in the Catskills. Though the net had to have been set well in advance. Was she a catch that had caught them by surprise? What else had they expected to trap? And why by the cabin? Mira rubbed her face trying to replay yesterday morning. She was going to get a headache trying to understand what had happened. The longer her mind ran in circles, the tighter that circle shrunk, giving her no answers. Maybe she wasn’t the only one using the area for a running ground and had been captured instead of another Felid.

Or maybe they were just cruel, heartless poachers really only out for whatever was caught in their net.

She must have made their jaws drop, she thought. Either way, now that someone knew there were cheetahs in the Catskills, people would be combing the range looking for more—or just for her.

A sigh drew her attention to the conked out man lying on his side on their bed. Considering the day before, the long night and that morning, he was probably exhausted. She hoped someday to have children with him. It wasn’t easy, but it wasn’t impossible either, as previous couples had discovered. Their humanoid DNA was close enough to merge and essentially create a hybrid, but the Felid remained dominant. She hoped their species never lost that uniqueness. She could imagine children with his solid shoulders and his eyes. Cloud gray and brown, like winter bark.

Mira followed his hand when it appeared from beneath the sheet at his hips. His fingers spread and wove down his chest to linger over his flat stomach. Her pulse hitched, and she was unable to look away. Flicking upward, his eyes were still shut. She wondered if he were asleep, or if he knew she was watching every single motion he made.

Compelled to follow that wicked hand, she watched as it drifted over his pecs to inch beneath the sheet edge, where the noticeable bulge created by his erection was impossible to miss.

“You’re evil,” she teased him, knowing without a doubt he was awake, and was aware of her captivation.

“No, I’m trying to be tempting,” he told her. “I’m all alone in this bed.” His lips stopped moving to form a slight pout.

Fabulous Dressing Part VI

If you're in London, then head over to the V&A for the Stephen Jones exhibition. He is an incredible milliner who has worked with such designer as Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood, Thierry Mugler, Christian Dior, John Galliano, Comme des Garçons and Marc Jacobs - WOW, what a group!

The show runs from now until May 31 2009 and is a must see.

By the way, this man and Philip Treacy are the two milliners I used as inspiration for Grace Strachan in Highland Heat - yes, she designs fabulous hats for a living.

A bit of random ridiculousness...

My first ad [it was with Ellora's Cave for Highland Heat] in the Realms of Fantasy magazine turned out to their second to the last issue - what a shame!

This was an interesting magazine that had short stories, movie and book reviews, and showcased artists - all in the world of fantasy.

In fact, I discovered work of Daniel Merriam, whose "In the Lap of Luxury" was the cover. I'll be looking for more from him - maybe visit one of the galleries that is showing his work because I like them.

One night, he discovers there's a part of him that thinks he's hunting something, or someone. Unable to shake the odd feeling, Hamish doesn't put it all together until he sees Grace Strachan, only then does he begin to understand what’s going on. He's in season and she is his mate.

Establishing trust with another has never been easy, but Hamish must find a way with Grace or risk losing her forever, and that simply isn’t an option.

eBook Talk!

I made some progress on my TBR pile [2 Laurell K Hamilton's, a Janet Evanovich and Linda Fairstein, and in the midst of a JD Robb], but the one that's still the freshest in my mind this morning is "Tartan Surprise" by Selena Illyria. A short satisfying read, exactly what I needed this past weekend.

"Tartan Surprise" is a shape-shifter tale with plenty of smoldering tension. Something Illyria does very well is dialogue, it fits.

One son of the pack leader is about to get married, the other is looking for someone to take the edge off before the full moon, fortunately dad has it all figured out. The timing couldn't be better for his assistant to arrive and cause havoc.

Like I said after I read Fling in Vampiropolis, Selena Illyria is one spectacular author who has more books on the cusp of coming out - good!

Friday, June 13, 2008

Ooo, look what I received today!

The cover for In Heat is here!

On the surface Hamish Buchanan appears to have it all. He's handsome, successful, and because of the horror that surrounded his birth, possesses the love and respect of an entire nation. But underneath, where few are allowed, lurks a secret. Although well hidden, the furtiveness needed to keep others from discovering those things he’s held private, also kept him from committing himself to another as fully as he would’ve wanted.

Then, one evening while attending a formal charity event, everything changes. Hamish senses something big is happening inside him and doesn't know what it could be. Not liking how he was starting to feel out of control, he starts to list mentally what he does identify. Physically, he's unusually hot and his heart is racing as if he was running all out. Emotionally, he has no patience for others, not even his closest friend and, the oddest part of all, if he didn’t know better he’d think he was hunting something.

Hamish doesn't recognize what any of it means until he sees Grace Strachan. Now he understands everything. The first thing he has to do is find a way into her life.

If he can find a way into her life, can he trust her with a secret held for a lifetime?

What's been cut?

I'm being ruthless as I go through "Come, Now" for submission and thought I'd share a snippet of what's been cut.

May 1896 – Petrovsky Palace, Moscow, Russia

In two hours he’d be sitting in a fabulously ornate carriage, with his beautiful wife, Alexandra Fedornova, sitting at his side. They’d be driving toward the Cathedral of the Assumption in the Kremlin where he would be crowned Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias. Their people would be pleased to see him officially don the crown.

How stupid, he thought, here he stood a few hours before the grand procession would take him to the Assumption Cathedral for his coronation, waiting to ask a man he’d never met or heard of, for his support.

When asked, Witte, his advisor, had been able to fill him in on the Ivanovich family. Without question or needing to do research which had surprised him because he believed he already knew everyone who was important in Russia. Apparently they were an old, extremely successful family based up in Novgorod. The people of the area respected the entire clan and never questioned when their word was given.
A set of footsteps echoed down the hallway toward him. Not sure how this meeting was to be conducted he decided the best route would be to ensure this man knew he, Nicholas II, was the person in charge not some man from the wild northern territories.

Just a snippet of what's out but there's also a hint in there of what's to come :-)
