I'm packing up and moving on out to the Authors After Dark Paranormal Weekend!

Getting Ready to Party!

October 21-23 in Suffern NY is the First Annual Authors After Dark Paranormal Weekend and some Samhain/Linden Bay authors are going to be there! It is an incredible list who will be attending, some I haven't met before, and can't wait to do so.

Did you know with three months to go, we're already knee deep in preparations? Oh yes, maybe even waist deep, but we are so excited about it all, we decided to go into the Samhain Cafe and drop some hings of what's going on.

So, come on over tomorrow, Thursday, August 6th, from 4-9:00pm est, and play. The hostesses with the mostest have given us permission to take over the Cafe and we intend to spread so fun.

Book Talk!

It's a sad time in the usually fabulous world of books. This Saturday, Judith Krug, Founder of Banned Books Week, passed away.

As if this wasn't bad enough, the industry suffered another serious setback. It doesn't sound like much when someone says Amazon deranked a bunch of books, except it is, to everyone who loves to read. This particular deranking means authors and their books [for me it's Zandia and Hot Couture] in the erotic and GLBT categories are now difficult, if not impossible for a reader to find on the online bookstores cyber shelves and purchase.

Descrimination? Censorship?

For some people it is.

However, I'm someone who prefers to look at the positive side of things and have a great solution if Amazon's actions bother you and you don't want to support them, then don't worry, there are plenty of choices out there to ensure you have your books!

You can go directly to the publisher and their bookstores [Samhain has My Bookstore and More and Ellora's Cave has Jasmine Jade]. Then there are the shops like Borders, B&N, BAM or Powell's online bookstores...or you can go to IndieBound, type in your zip code and find independent shops near you to shop at. If they don't supply the books you're looking for, ask them to order them.

And, the best part of shopping locally? It boosts the economy on your doorstep!

eBook and Book Talk!

Tuesday is usually when I talk about books and ebooks that are on my mind, today, I'm going to shake it up a bit and all because of a bit of "news" I saw on the t.v. this morning.

President Obama and his wife Michelle are headed on their first international trip as president and first lady. The story was short but it caught my attention. It featured the what the British press thought the people would think of Michelle and I was stunned by what they said. A few of them stated that they didn't think she would be well liked because she was a confident, independent thinking and successful woman and the British people preferred doey eyed submissives like Princess Diana [their words, not mine but I can't put in quotes in case I missed a few words out].

Another member of the press, a woman, said in reference to Michelle Obama's fashion sense, she'd probably receive a Jacqueline Kennedy [Jackie O] type reception, although Obama had more substance to her.

Oh man, was I angry. Not enough to boot the Brit beside me out of bed but enough to use today's eBook and Book Talk entry to first state the press don't speak for all people who live in the same country as they do, nor should they pretend to.

Grrr!

Did you know that the female characters I write about are independent, confident and successful? I do and wouldn't have it any other way! A few stories take place in Britain [The Gilded Cage and Highland Heat] and one takes on sexual equality, with women coming out on top [Zandia].

Turn away from this type of negativity and read/write/think something positive about women today.

I'm back from the left!

It was absolutely lovely to see family and friends. We enjoyed starting each day at Jean Paul's, walking everywhere because the sun was shining. While I'm getting my head around all that needs to be done besides laundry, shopping for food and pressies, I thought I'd share offers that are going on right now.

Update: Oh wow, what a blast! Seriously, if you are ever in the area this is a great town, full of things to do...apparently we missed the firemen's parade earlier in the day and wonderful shops. The Spotty Dog was a fabulous book shop and we're trying to get in there again this Fall.

This past week at the RT BOOKlovers Convention the fabulous Laura found a June copy of the BOOKreviews and Zandia was in there! It received a **** [4 star] review from Keitha Hart! Woohoo! Here's a snippet:

Thursday 13 #32!

With it being women's history month and Zandia coming out in paperback I have women on my mind. Here are 13 that I think about in no particular order.

1. Athena. Zeus had a headache and took an ax to it to relieve the pain and out came his daughter [Metis - knowledge or wisdom - was her mother]. She's the Goddess of Warfare and Wisdom [amongst other things] and I think the mixture is intriguing.

2. Mae West. She was sassy and smart, sexy and sweet, strong and successful.

3. Amelia Earhart. She showed there was nothing wrong with being adventurous.

4. Judy Blume. She is an author who ignores the nay-sayers and writes what kids want and need to read.

5. Audrey Hepburn. She is a person who suffered much through life and yet thought how she could use her success to help others.

6. Edith Head. She inspired me to be a designer and while I didn't go on with this she still is in my mind showing me new ways to push boundaries.

7. Helen Keller. She excelled despite it all.

8. Laura Ingalls Wilder. She wrote a series of books that I loved and took away from it that everything was possible.

9. Rosa Parks. She showed such incredible strength in the face of adversity and kept her dignity in a world of hatred.

10. My Grammy. She was a writer and painter who taught me to never stop learning. I loved that she was started doing aquatic aerobics in her late eighties.

11. My Mom. She installed in us confidence in being ourselves and reaching out for our dreams.

12. My sister. She's a mother of four and each one of her kids, 3 girls and 1 boy, and they are all incredible, can't wait to see what happens for them.

13. Sui Erom from Zandia. When faced with a future that didn't suit her, she left but eventually returns to help makes changes for all women.

Thursday 13 - #19!

Okay, here is a bit about how my mind sometimes works.

My most recent release, “Zandia”, is about a woman who can’t find a productive life on her home planet so she leaves. Her world is shaken up when she meets the perfect man for her, only he seems to offer everything she hated about her home planet. This week I recieved a fabulous review [JERR gave it a 5 stars and O-grasmic heat :-)] and realized the book was getting some great ones that used such snippets as “a kick ass story” and “alien feminists can enjoy their sexuality”. At the same time, I have just finished the Comment for a Cure challenge, thinking about what to do for October - it being Breast Cancer Awareness month - and my mind was obviously focused on women and the challenges they face - hence this weeks Thursday 13.

In 1985 Nairobi, Kenya hosted a conference to formulate strategies for advancing women’s rights. In 1995, Beijing, China followed this up with a “plan of action”. And in 2000, the United Nations hosted a conference to see what type of progress was being made.

The subjects on the table included, but not limited to, were: reproductive rights, abduction of girls, poverty and economy, education, health, and violence. How did they do? In fifteen years, eight out of 188 member states had made any progress. Seven of the eight were developed nations. In my opinion, that is a pretty piss poor showing. Here are 13 places you can go and do something productive, and some will cost you nothing but time:

Think local! Open your phone book and find the local Women’s Shelter, see what they need, it could be socks, shampoo, movies for the kids they bring with them, or your time. With all the travel we do, the cutie and I keep the bags they give you on airplanes and the little bottles in hotels then give those to our local shelter - there’s a comb, toothbrush and tooth paste, mouthwash, lotion, shampoo, soap, socks, pen and pad of paper in a small bag for when they arrive. Go through your closet and all those things you aren't wearing anymore that are in good condition, donate them to Dress for Success, or another group like it. Don’t forget your local food bank - with the holidays coming, this could make someones day. There’s loads of things to do for someone who, at the moment, needs a little help to get back on their feet.

I am so excited about these wonderful reviews! Sui Erom knows what kind of life she wants to have, and even though she quivers when Xer is near, I think it's safe to say she has everything he wants and will do anything to have. If you haven't already, check out Zandia at Samhain! Did I mention the paperback has a release date now, it will be the end of March, 2008 :-)
