The Met Costume Institute Gala Fashion Thoughts

Recently The Met Costume Institute held it's annual gala and despite it's foundation in the fashion world, the clothes were kind of blah.

Safe.

I liked the dark blue of Oprah Winfrey's Oscar de la Renta and Sienna Miller's Emilio Pucci gowns and found the idea of Halston Heritage interesting, always liked him, although was surprised Sarah Jessica Parker wore it - a little tame for her, wasn't it? but then again, she is on the design team.  Beige, nude, tan, whatever you want to call it, the color has been all over the place lately and I think Kate Hudson wore it best in a Stella McCartney gown.  Simple, yes, but it was an elegant simple.  She also didn't overdo on the accessories and shoes were great, although I thought leaned a bit on the clunky side for that dress.

Which was my favorite?

There was no instant adoration gown, but loved the plum color and overtime, I guess Thandie Newton in Vivienne Westwood was my favorite.  Again, she kept the accessories and makeup low key, and this helped the dress itself stand out.  The top is like folded paper, origami, and is truly wonderful.  Yes, this dress is my favorite of the night.

Robin Hood looks good, but what about the scenery?

If you are thinking of visiting England, after seeing some of the sites in London, I suggest you escape the chaos of city life, which can be found everywhere, and head north!

Robin Hood, to be released in May 2010, was partly filmed in the North in such places as Alnwick Castle [Hogwarts from Harry Potter books] and Bamburgh Castle and are definitely must see sites, but not too far from these places is even more that should be visited.

Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, is across the bay from Bamburgh and can only be reached when the tide is out .  It is a small island and is a nature reserve and rich in history with a castle, ruined monastary/museum, and the island is known for their mead.  So, if you're a fan of the Celts and celtic books, this is a must visit place.

Now, head south, and you'll land in the place lovers of Vampires books and movies should visit, Whitby.

Why?  Because this is the place Irish author, Bram Stoker, holidayed during summer breaks and also has brought loads of interesting local tidbits into Dracula

Everytime but one [the rain won out on that visit] we've climbed the stairs from town up to the abbey and afterwards, never remember if it was 199 or 198.  I think the first step is a dubious one at a couple inches.

Now, Fish & Chips can be found all across England, but smoked kippers from Fortunes are a must do and they are limited in their opening times so head there immediately.  I happen to eat nothing that exists in the water [and yet I love visiting England's coastal gems], but my cutie does and grew up not too far from here.  He makes a point to stop for a couple kippers from this place for breakfast.

St Mary's Church is another gem to visit in Whitby and make sure to walk through the graveyard - it's sad when you realize how many are for very young and a few empty ones give you a spooky feeling.

Have a seafaring fan in the house?  Then a little further south from Whitby is Staithes, hometown of Captain James Cook, and it is definitely worth checking out as well.

A village that is the ultimate definition of small village life [parking up on the hill and walk down to the homes].  This is where it is said the man who would go on to chart Hawaii amongst other places became enamored with exploring the seas.

From there, you can head inland, and within minutes you're on the North Yorkshire Moors where such books as Wuthering Heights and All Creatures Great and Small are set and museums for the Brontës and Herriot are located.  To the east is the Lake District and Beatrix Potter and further south is York with it's incredible Minster, Jorvik Viking Centre, The Shambles and on the outskirts is Castle Howard, where Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited was filmed.

That is just a tiny portion of what can be seen and experienced in the North of England.  The history is deep [don't forget about the War of the Roses] at every turn and plenty of literary / artistic [Henry Moore has a fabulous museum in Leeds and the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, 500 acres of parkland is near Wakefield] influences to keep everyone eager for what's next.

So, yes, the new Robin Hood film looks good, but every promo I see makes me think about all the other fabulousness that can be found around northern England.

One last thing, because I love this part of England and there is that bit about writing what you know, I've also used it in my own books.  You can find the North of England in The Gilded Cage / Hot Couture [Leeds] and the newly released My Angel [Leeds and Knaresborough].

It's my favorite time of year!

Award Season!

No, not because I care who won what, but more along the lines of who wore what!  That's right, it's time to focus on fashion.  Here's a few things I came away with from watching last night's Red Carpet coverage and the Golden Globes broadcast.

First off, for me, there was no wow or wonderful dresses.  Yes, I thought some actresses had chosen well [as in they wore the dress, not the other way around].

Glenn Close, Carey MulliganTea Leoni [liked the casual dress shirt and formal skirt thing, I would wear that], and Marion Cotillard with the saucy lace peeking out from the slit, also looked great.  Now, while I liked the gown Colin Farrell's girlfriend (?) Alicja Bachleda wore, it looked like it was going to slip down with her next breath.  Ooops.

In the end, the best all around for for me was Courtney Cox.  Simply elegant, not over accessorized, and suited her very well.  The belt and slight train were yummy.  By the way, the dress is from Victoria Beckham's Spring/Summer 2010 line.

Something else that drew my attention was color.  Often safe color choices are made and I totally get that, my safe color is black.  However, last night there was everything from soft pastels to rich jewel tones.  The more unique standouts were Sandra Bullock and Diane Kruger, ooo, also Diana Agron and Sofia Vergara with that grey dress and single burgandy twist - nice], but the one I thought was spectacular was the one Zoe Saldana chose.  While the dress was a bit too much, the color looked divine on her.

And finally, there was another thing I found interesting today while I looked at all the pics.  There's one of Kate Hudson [by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images] that reminds me of a book, Soulless by Gail Carriger.  I keep seeing and totally love that cover, to such an extent, I know nothing about [only because of lack of time] and still might buy it based on the cover alone.

So, my conclusion of the Golden Globe attire: It was a safe night [maybe because it was hard to focus on anything other than how to help Haiti] where everyone looked fairly good, and came across only one I saw that caused me to shout, "NO!".  I won't share a picture because I'm not in to the trashing aspect of fashion, although this one was trully horrible.

Oh, and here's a little Gerard Butler eyecandy to end on a good note!

By the way, while I had an idea of who I liked from watching last night, I perused the galleries on both Skinny vs Curvy, Just Jared, and E! Online - thank you for posting them.

Stuff from a writer...

Research.

What is that?
It's a necessity and something a writer does to better understand a particular thing. One of your goals is to write a story that puts the reader right there alongside your hero and heroine. To do that, you need to know about whatever it is you're writing about from all angles.

How long does it take?
Don't be stingy, take as long as is necessary.

Where do I go, the library?
Absolutely! You can go to your local library and troll through the shelves, or go with a list of specific books. You can also do research online, by asking questions or conducting interviews of people who would know, or experience it for yourself.

I'm writing fiction, doesn't that mean it's all made up?
Hmmm, to a certain extent, yes, you are making the plot and characters up. However, if there is anything or anyplace that is real, say like New York City, then it must be handled correctly. If you don't and it slips by your editor as well, then you can be sure a reader will call you out on it. And they should, because you pulled them out of the story by not doing your research.

Let me give you an example of using research from a variety of sources. A friend of mine recommended I visit a particular cafe while in Paris. I found it detailed in my travel guide and checked out the map to see if there was anything around it I might want to see. All this was in preparation for a trip, not a research session.

Okay, there's the back story, and in reality, it led to Taming Marie Antoinette. One of the scenes that pulled it all together was when the heroine goes to a cafe to do some work and eat a late lunch:

Liana entered the historic sweet shop Ladurée and sighed, feeling lighter in spirit already. She loved this place with a passion, its marble black and white checkerboard floor, with dark wood and glass cases full of sugared treats. This was a place she could see herself living in if given the choice. Off to the right, behind a screen and a few tall plants was an ornate and intimate dining room full of mirrors, gilding and cherubs on the ceiling. When her turn came, she requested a seat for one and told the woman she’d be eating lunch as well.

Settling into one of the bench seats backed up against the wall, she set the menu down and looked around the room. There was a wonderful mix of people. Lovers, friends, business meetings and even a few tourists, almost filled the space. The seat across the table from her was empty, which suited her. She pulled out her notebook and a couple of colored pencils from her coat pocket.

A few moments later the waitress, wearing a white apron, came up and took her order.

Bonjour. Bonjour. Etes-vous prêt?

Oui, s'il vous plaît, une omelette sans les champignons ou les tomates, une cruche d'eau et un pot de chocolat chaud.” She always ordered a pot of hot chocolate whenever she was here but rarely an omelet. Although they were good, there was no way she’d eat anything with a mushroom and tomato within sniffing distance but today she wanted the fluffy egg item so asked for one without the offending items.

Bien.

She didn’t have to wait long after ordering. The jug of water and pot of chocolate came before the omelet. She poured a small glass of water and took a sip, before moving on to the good stuff. She enjoyed watching the thick molten chocolate silently slip into her delicate cup. Picking up the hot pink and gold china, her eyes automatically shut as she inhaled the delicious aroma. Moving the rim to rest on her lower lip, Liana tilted the cup and poured a small amount of warm decadence to hold in her mouth before swallowing.

Pardon.

“Excuse me, mademoiselle.”

“Oh! I’m so sorry.”

Est-ce que ça vous ennuierait partageant votre table avec un autre?

Startled, she’d been so lost in the chocolate she hadn’t noticed the young woman standing close to the side of her table asking if she’d be comfortable with having another person share her table.

Oui, oui, of course.”

It was common to have to share a table in the small space. Coming after the lunch crowd was because she preferred not to, but would never think to put the staff out by saying no. Moving her notebook and pencils to the bench beside her, she shifted her beverage paraphernalia closer, making sure there was space available for the other person.

Out of her peripheral vision, she saw a large presence in a dark suit sit in the chair opposite, but didn’t look up. She hadn’t come here for idle repartee.

“Thank you for making room for me.”

The familiar deep, sexy growl brought gooseflesh racing up her arms. Immediately her eyes flicked up to meet sharp green orbs with soft brown flecks. Were they the same ones she’d seen surrounded by a black half mask? Quickly she took in his hair, general physique, and gasped in surprise.

Oui, we meet again, Liana.”

Her heart started racing. She was sharing her table with one of the twins from the Depravity Dance.

Did all that happen during my visit to the cafe? Nope, but I imagine you can pick out what did. The decor, the food [and yes the hot chocolate was divine], the type of people who were there, and then poetic license took over. So, my advice in regards to doing research is simple:

Do the research, do it well and in depth. Take notes and pictures to refer back to. Then, when it comes to writing, the details will flow along with the words.

eBook Talk!

It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month and OohRah! immediately came to mind.

Okay, I can hear the question now - What does a Marine just back from Afghanistan have to do with breast cancer? Besides loving breasts and all the pleasure they offer, Warrant Officer Dale Smythe lost his mother to breast cancer, and decides to volunteer at a local Run for a Cure.

While there, handing out cups of water and support to whoever needs it, he sees a young woman who is obviously isn't a runner or someone who had prepared much for the race. Besides being beautiful, he likes her determination to make it through to the end and, after asking if it was all right with the other volunteers he stood with, he abandons his post to run at her side and help her finish.

As for why Tasha is there, well, she doesn't always have the best experience when it comes to her mammograms, and figures this one more way to get the upper hand on them. Besides, the sooner a cure is found, the sooner she can stop stressing out.

So, yes, OohRah! is about a Marine and how his relationship works when he's deployed. However, there's much more to Dale, the man, than what he does professionally.

eBook and Book Talk!

This past spring, I was introduced to the Duval Inc series by Stella and Audra Price and am thoroughly enjoying each installment. First up is Marsh, a seriously sexy dominant Djinn and his gorgeous bound consort/physically tough assasin Janey starring in Wishbound ["Wishes" and Glamour"]. I bought the paperback for the next installment, Gifts, to read while heading to the left of us and never got a chance, but then London for the Holidays came out as an ebook, I had a new iTouch to get back into ebooks and so I jumped on them both, just in different formats. Oh, and in reverse order...don't ask why because it didn't matter.

London for the Holidays introduces Mal, a hot independent vamp, and Thisbe, a cool submissive Conglacio and takes the reader on one heck of a wild ride. From London to Austria, with good things and bad happening in both violent and sexy ways, these two eventually settle upon a relationship that works for them.

Gifts follows Marsh and Janey through the holidays, both human and Djinn, in Austria [yes, something that takes Mal to Austria is for Marsh - your choice whether you want to know how he does it before or after knowing what he's doing] with a side trip to Africa. On page 149 I was seriously surprised [hence remembering the page number] and couldn't put the book down until I knew what happened.

The sister writers are in a class all their own. They create stories that don't fit within a box, something I specifically enjoy discovering. There's no way to predict which way things are going which, as a reader, definitely keeps you engaged and eager for the next installment.

If you also like coloring outside the lines, check out Stella and Audra Price.

I'm back from the left!

It was absolutely lovely to see family and friends. We enjoyed starting each day at Jean Paul's, walking everywhere because the sun was shining. While I'm getting my head around all that needs to be done besides laundry, shopping for food and pressies, I thought I'd share offers that are going on right now.

Phaze and The Samhellion [Samhain Newsletter] are both offering FREE seasonal reads - I'll have one in the latter group [think Rol from Zandia], Whiskey Creek Press Torrid has a FREE cookbook through the end of December - I have a recipe inside that I love, Samhain is giving away 60 books in December [Angie, Editor at Samhain has a couple of Kindles to giveaway], and Ellora's Cave is having a fabulous sale on their prints! Oh, and if you're a member of the Monthly Scorcher Yahoo or Google], there's a couple more things coming up.

A Unique Raffle that benefits 3 charities is going on right now - head here for more information!

Don't you just love visuals!

Hot Couture has three stories in it about women who have a passion for fashion and the men who love them. I'm a rather visual person and like mini book trailers. So, I put the two together and came up with three, that's right, in this case one plus one equals three. Here are the mini book trailers that celebrate:

The Leather Bride

Taming Marie Antoinette

The Gilded Cage

The Leather Bride, Taming Marie Antoinette and The Gilded Cage are available separately or together as Hot Couture from Phaze, Amazon, Barnes & Noble or your local bookstore.

Enjoy!

Book Talk!

I picked up a book the other day that I've been eyeing up for some time because there were Djinn, Demons and Assassins. Interesting and let me tell you, I wasn't disappointed.

Wishbound by Stella and Audra Price [available from Phaze in eBook and Paperback] has two stories between its covers. Wishes and Glamour are the first two offerings in the Duvall, Inc series and boy does it start out with a bang!

Wishes is where you are introduced to a few of the characters that you'll see again, but the main two are Janey and Nicodemus. There's lightening and thunder rolling around the surface when these two meet and it never lets up. Glamour has the two of them taking off for China and the heat is still on high, even while in the midst of a difficult job. With all the happenings going on, you suddenly hit the end and relaize how real these two characters feel. Personally, I'm eager to meet Nicodemus's parents...they're older than Jesus you know :-)

Stella and Audra Price are quite a duet that shouldn't be missed. They write about a collection of unusual characters that are dark, deep and adorable. The reader cares for them all, whether they are a lover or assassin. They are right there with them as they’re making their way through the easy and trying times. The road they travel is both rough and delightful, with a good dose of the unexpected mixed in throughout. Simply put, the Price sisters deliver satisfaction with a side of dynamite!

I love finding fresh reads! If, like me, you fall for into the Duvall, Inc series and are eager anticipating the next installment, then I'll tell you it's out now! Gifts, now available in eBook here, will be coming out in paperback this June!

Thursday 13 #34!

On Monday of this week I had two books released: The Gilded Cage and Hot Couture. In celebration and because it's on my mind, I'm going to tell you some things you may or may not know about these books using my TT.

The Gilded Cage
1. The Gilded Cage is the third book in the "A Passion for Fashion' series.

2. The heroine is a jeweler about to be offered the show of a lifetime.

3. The hero has an interesting set of piercings.

4. The heroine lives and works in London.

5. The hero lives and works in York, but is opening a satellite office in London.

6. The Gilded Cage in the story has a special water bottle as an attachment.

Hot Couture

The Gilded Cage and Hot Couture are OUT!

Phrew, what a day - let me tell you about my two new releases :-)

My 'A Passion for Fashion' series is all about women with some place in the fashion world who experience a once in a lifetime opportunity in the field they love. The first three tales have been brought together to form "Hot Couture" [available in both paperback and ebook].

Who are these women? Well, there's a muse who makes an unusual walk down the runway in "The Leather Bride" [New York], a graduate student hosts her dissertation project...a Haute Couture exhibition...in "Taming Marie Antoinette" [Paris] and a jeweler is offered a place in an world-renowned museum in "The Gilded Cage" [London].

Did I mention they're each located in a different fashion capital? They are and this takes the reader on a trip.

Now, the one thing I have mentioned as yet is the men in these women's lives. They are gorgeous, successful, and have a passion for their lovers that is unmatched. Oh, I almost forgot [not likely :-)]. These couples have a varied taste when it comes to sex...they play!

Buon Giorno!

I'm HOME! Basically we've been gone since before Christmas and I fell in love with my bed all over again last night.

While I was away there was some great news on the publishing front...The Leather Bride, Taming Marie Antoinette and The Gilded Cage are going to be put together and published as Hot Couture, with a simultaneous ebook/print release! How fabulous is that! And, dare I say, what interesting timing because while in Milan I did plenty of research for the fourth book in the series.

That's right, I was in Milan and tomorrow will take the opportunity of TT to share the incredible place we stayed...let's just say Villa, frescoes and plenty of cioccolata calda! So hope to see you all tomorrow!

Once success was theirs he needs to reconnect with his lover for a dose of humanity but finds more drastic measures are needed than a phone call.
